As one of the oldest public universities within the USA, the University of North Carolina has been enrolling students since 1795. The state has a prominent history of producing tar and pitch, which influenced the athletics team name of the 'Tar Heels'. The mascot of a ram dates back to 1924 when the team manager bought a ram the annual football game against Virginia Military Institute as good luck - the ram was inspired by past player Jack "The Battering Ram" Merrit.
