Meet Quade Young - Whakatane.

Tell us about how you got into kickboxing?

I’ve always been someone who likes to push myself. Always trying to set new limits and goals. This was just the next adventure for me, to see how far I could go. I won the North Island title at the end of last year. I’m getting back into it now. I’ll see where it goes. I’m just going to wing it.

What is it about this sport that you really enjoy?

I’m definitely someone who just needs physical exertion to feel good. I’ve always been training and doing sports. This is just the next thing I’ve set my mind on that allows me to enjoy life. Kickboxing is basically the way I exert any extra energy I have. If I’ve had a hard day, it’s nice to come out and let it all out on a bag. Generally speaking, as guys, we find it hard express ourselves through words. So for me, it’s nice to release it that way and get it all out after a training. It definitely helps me.

What’s one piece of advice you would give that you’ve learnt along the way?

Stop worrying about what other people think so much. If it makes you happy, if that’s what you want to do, then pursue it. You’re here to live your life, not everyone else's.

Tell us about your hometown...

I’m born and bred in Whakatane. I’ve been here pretty much all my life. It’s nice having a close gym, good friends and peers around. Everyone around here is pretty much my second family now. It’s always going to be a hometown to me. I’ve moved away now, but every chance I get, I make sure to come back and catch up with everyone.

Tell us about the gym here that you spend a lot of time in...

The gym has been here for about ten years. Carl started doing training sessions outside one of the halls. He then brought it back here and basically started this himself, and other people came along and got involved. Around the gym are the names of people who’ve got involved and been a part of the gym. Some have stayed, some have moved away - but it’s always going to be a home for them. It’s good to be surrounded by the people who have the same drive as you and want the best for you. It’s hard to find that sometimes, so when you find that, you hold on tight.
