Meet Oumar Beaumont - Auckland.

What inspires you?

I’m really into my music. I’d say my goals are ambitious. People who inspire me are people who are driven, people who are absolutely committed. I just want to live comfortably. I’m from a pretty lower class background and I’m just trying to slowly make my way up. But it’s only made me stronger. I don’t think anything negative is ever worth dwelling on, it only makes you weaker mentally. Everything is an experience.

What’s something you’ve learnt that you would share with others?

If you find what you love doing - then guaranteed - there’s something in life that involves doing that. As long as you love doing it, you’re going to do it more often and you’re going to be the best at it. Life is about putting in hard work, but hard work becomes a lot easier when you’re doing stuff you like.

How do you stay connected to your heritage?

I guess I’ve always been a different kid. I’m African, but grew up here in New Zealand. I always like to address that and be unique to myself.

What comes to mind when you think of a kiwi summer?

I think we take growing up in New Zealand for granted. Our summers are quite special, our longest holiday is at Christmas. The tree at summer is the pohutukawa tree. I think it’s one of the most beautiful trees in the world. It’s green and red. It shows the christmas spirit, but in the New Zealand way, on the beach. There were two pohutukawa trees on the beach where I grew up, so that was definitely the Christmas tree for me.

How do you choose to live your life?

With anything in life, there’s always going to be two conflicting ideas. People aren’t always going to agree and it’s not going to matter in the end. People are going to do what they want to do. At the end of the day I just do what I want to do. I don’t let anything stop me.
